Constant Toothache

Call Loudoun Dental Associates (LDA) as soon as you feel discomfort or pain. (703) 542-7600. Be sure to rinse the mouth with warm water to clean it out. Gently use dental floss to remove any food caught between the teeth.

For objects stuck in the mouth, try to gently remove with floss but do not try to remove it with sharp or pointed instruments.

Chipped or cracked tooth

If the tooth was broken or chipped, wrap the broken tooth in wet gauze or a wet towel. Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply ice to the side of your face where the tooth is damaged. Schedule an emergency visit with LDA immediately and bring the tooth (in the wet gauze) with you to your appointment.

Loosened or knocked-out tooth

If your tooth becomes loose call LDA immediately. For a knocked-out tooth, try the following actions:

  1. Gently insert the lost tooth back in the gum by holding the tooth by the top of the crown. Be sure not to touch the root or your gum. If the tooth has become dirty, gently rinse it but do not wash or touch any gum or tissue.
  2. If you can’t place it back into the gum, hold the tooth under your tongue or between your cheek and gum, and schedule an emergency dental visit with Loudoun Dental Associates.
  3. For a knocked-out tooth keep it moist, place it in between your cheek and gums or in milk. Be sure to schedule an emergency visit with LDA or an Emergency Room depending on the severity of your injury.

Bitten Tongue or Lip

Clean the area with a wet cloth, rinse with warm water and place ice on you’re the injured area to reduce swelling. If the bleeding persists, go contact LDA immediately or visit your closest emergency center.

Broken Jaw

Apply ice or a cold compress to your face. Go to your emergency center immediately.

When you have a dental emergency, it’s important to visit your dentist or an emergency room as soon as possible.

Dental emergencies can be avoided by taking simple precautions, such as wearing a mouthguard during sports activities to prevent teeth from breaking or being knocked out, and avoiding hard foods that may crack or break your teeth.
